Front yards get a short list of elements done well: a wider walkway, solid steps, a planted bed along the house, and lighting at the entry.
The City of Ottawa requires at least 50 per cent of the front yard to be soft landscaping, such as lawn, plants, soil or mulch. Artificial turf does not count. Driveway and walkway widths are limited too, so a front-yard plan is checked against the rules before it is drawn.
Front steps and walkways are rebuilt on a compacted base deep enough to resist frost heave. Precast or natural stone steps last longer than wood and need less upkeep.
Plantings are picked for four seasons: evergreens and structure for winter, and hardy perennials for colour from May to October.
