Backyard living: patios, interlock, fire features and lighting

Patios and outdoor rooms built for Ottawa frost, with fire, lighting and privacy planned in.

Most backyard projects centre on a patio. Interlock, natural flagstone and porcelain pavers all work here if the base is built right: excavated, laid on compacted granular, and graded to shed water away from the house.

Fire features range from a portable bowl to a built-in gas fire table. Gas lines are run by a licensed gas fitter. Wood-burning pits must follow the City's open-air fire rules, so check before you plan one.

Low-voltage lighting is laid out on the plan so cables go in before the pavers do. Path lights, step lights and a few uplights on trees are usually enough.

Privacy comes from planting, screens and pergolas. Structures, larger decks and pools may need City permits, and that is flagged at the design stage.
